Wrought iron is generally longer-lasting than cast iron. As we said, cast iron is harder but it’s also more brittle. The extra carbon in its molecular structure compared with wrought iron results in internal stress points that are more likely to fracture under extreme stress rather than bend. There are advantages and disadvantages to this: cast iron is more likely to retain its exact shape without undergoing any warping or bending.

It is worth mentioning that aluminium window joinery has not always been so popular. Until recently, it was regarded as cold joinery, and there was a lot of truth in that. Therefore, whilst aluminium was used in warehouses, offices and shops, it was not used in single-family homes. Nowadays, the situation is quite different – of course, aluminium does not feel as ‘warm’ as wood and, when the frame comes into contact with a warm hand, it will feel cooler than, say, pine. This is all due to the fact that aluminium does not have as much ability to absorb heat. However, we should add that in reality its temperature will often be the same as that of the aforementioned wood.

Ultimately, you get what you pay for. If you’re on a tight budget and are forced to settle for less, so be it. But just know that wrought iron fences are worth their weight in gold (and they’re pretty heavy, so that’s saying something!).

While ornamental cast iron panels are known for their durability, regular maintenance is essential to keep them looking their best. Over time, exposure to the elements can lead to corrosion or rust. To prevent this, it is advisable to apply a protective coating periodically. Cleaning the panels gently with mild soap and water will also help preserve their finish and vibrancy.
