Nitrile rubber offers good durability for general use, while the flexibility of the spring behind the sealing lip keeps the oil seal firmly in place against the moving part.
Before installing the oil seal, it is important to lubricate it to reduce friction and prevent damage during installation. A silicone-based lubricant is recommended for most applications. If the oil seal is to be installed in a high-temperature or high-pressure environment, a more specialized lubricant may be required.
Standard springs are made of carbon steel. We use stainless-steel springs for our GR and GRST oil seals made from FKM rubber. In some rare cases, an O-ring is even used as a spring element. Standard PTFE lip seals are not fitted with springs.
In this an auxiliary lip is provided along with the regular sealing lip. The additional dust lip protects the main sealing lip against dust and other fine solid contaminants and therefore this type is recommended for use in polluted environments. To achieve a long lifetime a suitable lubricant between the two sealing lips should be applied.
O-rings are made to be elastic as they are usually stretched to fit into a groove before being compressed. You need to be careful of how you stretch the o-ring while installing it. In fact, you should stretch it more than 50%, and the stretching should be on all the sides, rather than one side.

Oil seals are used in a great many machines.
The primary function of a shaft oil seal is to retain lubricating fluids within the system while preventing the ingress of external contaminants. This is particularly important in high-speed applications where the loss of lubricant or the entry of contaminants could lead to rapid wear and damage to the equipment.

It is important to select a gasket that is specifically designed for your engine make and model, as well as one that is made from high-quality materials that can withstand the harsh conditions inside the engine.
Longer seal life can be expected with shafts having a Rockwell (RC) hardness of 30 or more. When exposed to abrasive contamination, the hardness should be increased to RC 60.
Assembling the oil seals is only possible with the right assembly tools. Due to the high risk of damage during assembly, it is important that you have tools with which you can work carefully. A bearing fitting tool set is ideal.
Oil seals with outer metal cases may include finishes or treatments applied to the outer edge to aid in rust protection, identification, and sealing of scratches or imperfections in the housing bore. Common finishes applied to the outside edge of metal O.D. oil seals include plain (a bonding agent of usually a yellowish-green color), a color-painted edge, and a grinded-polished edge.
