The metal case serves as the oil seal’s exterior or frame, providing rigidity and strength to the seal. The case material selection depends on the environment in which the seal will operate. Often, the same rubber material used in the seal element covers the case to help seal the exterior of the oil seal in the housing bore.
- In machinery and industrial equipment, thin rubber gaskets are used in pumps, compressors, and hydraulic systems to prevent leaks and contamination. They help to maintain the efficiency and reliability of the equipment, reducing downtime and maintenance costs. These gaskets are often custom-designed to meet specific requirements, such as chemical resistance, temperature tolerance, or pressure rating.
Oil seals, also known as rotary shaft seals or lip seals, are a specific type of gasket designed to prevent the leakage of oil or other fluids in rotating shafts.

One of the key features of Mico spark plugs is their advanced technology, which allows for better ignition and combustion. This leads to smoother engine operation and enhanced fuel efficiency, ultimately saving you money on fuel costs. Additionally, Mico spark plugs are engineered to resist fouling and corrosion, ensuring consistent performance over time.

The oil seal is our first line of defense in regards to keeping lubrication inside the reducer. It might also be described as the last line of defense – keeping contaminants outside the reducer where they belong. The average seal is incredibly simple in design – made up of a case, a lip or lips, and frequently a garter spring. Of course, some are exponentially more intricate and are manufactured with unusual materials, but the majority are straightforward.
Its sealing edge comes in full contact with the shaft surface in order to provide excellent sealing performance.
(See Figure 3.)
Beyond the variety of lip designs, oil seals also come in various case designs, each serving a unique role. Here are some of the most common ones:
Have you found the right oil seal for your application? The next step is a precise and error-free assembly, so that the oil seal is fitted without being damaged. If you are replacing an existing oil seal, you must first disassemble it with the same care and precision. In this article, you will read all about the different steps of an appropriate (dis)assembly process that contributes to optimal operation within the application.

Both sealing types are popularly used in different mechanical engineering applications. How are they different? The article explains the fundamental working mechanism of both categories of seals.
Meanwhile, rubber-cased oil seals are used under conditions where a metal-cased seal can fail (for example, because of thermal expansion). Unlike the metal-cased type, these seals do not rust. Moreover, they can seal a lightly damaged housing better than metal-covered seals since, in high temperatures, rubber can provide a more stable sealability.
